My name is Eugene Schneeberg. I am a sought-after speaker, consultant, trainer in fatherhood, violence prevention, children of incarcerated parents, criminal and juvenile justice reentry.

But never meeting a father.

Growing up, I always thought he would walk through the door, holding a fluffy teddy bear, saying something along the lines of “Hey buddy, I know I wasn’t around all this while, but I’m here now.”

Still, I never met my father.

And then comes the wrong side of the dial.

The horror of insecurity – “what’s wrong with me? Doesn’t he love me enough to find me? Is it my fault he left? Who is he? Will I ever be like him?

The anguish of mental illness – “what’s the point? If I’m not loved by someone who brought me into this world, then no one will truly love me. I’ve lost all interest in life, and I don’t want anyone in my life.”

The dangerous pit of gang violence – “Maybe I will find the love I seek here. They are older guys who want to look after me, right? They could be the father I never had.”

Still, I never met my father in them.

I dropped out of high school.

And then I had a mental breakdown.

I invested 30 years of my life searching for a father I never knew.

But then I found a light.
